Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
