The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
