Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
