EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
